Pro Choice – Against the Violation of Reproductive Rights

So it’s 2021 and we are still fighting against the violation of reproductive rights! Politics must be kept out of people’s uteruses! We need universal, safe, legal and free access to abortion as a basic human right and as basic health care! It also has to be part of emergency supply in times of a pandemic!

Abolish Section 219a of the German Criminal Code

The doctor Kristina Hänel has been legally convicted of section 219a of the German criminal code, which prohibits advertising for abortion. She provided information on her website about the way in which she performs abortions in her medical practice. She is now no longer allowed to provide information about abortions on her website and is now taking the matter to the Constitutional Court.

Even if Hänel can no longer provide information on her website, all people who do not perform abortions can continue to do so. So now we must all work together to put factual information on the Internet. We cannot leave the sovereignty of information to the fundamentalists.

Section 219a of the German criminal code creates a legally intolerable situation for doctors: It allows the punishment of factual information about the “how” of abortions. We therefore urgently need to abolish §219a and decriminalize abortions and the dissemination of information about them.

The struggle in Germany for self-determined reproductive rights is unfortunately only a small part of the worldwide struggle on this issue.

Pro Choice: Abortion is Basic Health Care

Pregnant people and doctors are still being criminalized in many countries and the self-determination of our bodies is still heavily restricted! Pregnant people suffer from heteronomy and still can’t decide on their own what is best for themselves. Solidarize! This is not acceptable! Nobody else should be able to decide about our own physical and mental health and if we carry out an (unwanted) pregnancy or not! Laws need to be set aside which restrict access to safe abortion and we need to support people’s autonomy over their own lives!

Die Ärztin Kristina Hänel wurde wegen Paragraf 219a des deutschen Strafgesetzbuches, der Werbung für Abtreibung verbietet, rechtskräftig verurteilt. Sie hat auf ihrer Website darüber informiert, in welcher Form sie in ihrer Arztpraxis Schwangerschaftsabbrüche durchführt. Sie darf auf ihrer Webseite nun nicht mehr über Schwangerschaftsabbrüche informieren und geht nun vor das Verfassungsgericht.

Auch wenn Hänel auf ihrer Website nicht mehr informieren kann, können das weiterhin alle Personen, die keine Abbrüche machen. Wir müssen nun also alle gemeinsam dafür sorgen, die sachlichen Informationen zu verbreiten. Wir können die Informationshoheit nicht den Fundamentalist*innen überlassen.

Paragraf 219a sorgt für eine rechtlich untragbare Situation für Ärzt*innen: Mit ihm darf die sachliche Information über das „Wie“ von Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen bestraft werden. Wir müssen den Paragrafen dringend abschaffen und Schwangerschaftsabbrüche und die Verbreitung von Informationen darüber entkriminalisieren.

Der Kampf in Deutschland um selbstbestimmte reproduktive Rechte ist leider nur ein kleiner Teil des weltweiten Kampfes zu diesem Thema. Solidarisiert euch!
